I want to know the requirements to join NHS

Members must be juniors or seniors. Sophomores and transfer students are eligible after the first grading period is complete (these are national rules, not ours, and we cannot change them). Transfer students who were in NHS at their previous school and meet our requirements will be accepted without application – talk to the adviser for details.

Membership in the National Honor Society is based on four pillars:

  • Scholarship – a cumulative GPA of at least 3.8.
  • Service – a history of volunteer service and willingness to serve.
  • Leadership – positions or roles in school, church, or the community. These can be formal or informal.
  • Character – a record of honesty, respect, and responsibility, shown by no N's in the term before you apply and no U's (ever).

You will be required to maintain these standards, including the GPA and no N's or U's, throughout the rest of your BRHS career. See details in the BRHS NHS bylaws.

I want to join NHS for the first time
  1. Check that you meet the requirements above.
  2. Complete the new member application by December 4, 2026.
    • Don't forget to include a copy of your transcript.
    • Don't forget to include all necessary signatures.
  3. Watch your school email for the selection decision on December 8.
  4. Fill out the paperwork, pay dues, etc. (details will be in the email mentioned in step 3) by December 16.
  5. Participate in the induction on Tuesday, January 5, 2027 at 7:00 p.m. in the BRHS auditorium. Wear your nice clothes and bring your parents (who can dress however they want).
I want to renew my membership

For students who were NHS members last year.

  1. Confirm your GPA is still at least 3.8 and that you have no N's or U's.
    • Print your current transcript to prove your continued eligibility.
  2. Pay dues of $15 to the front office. You'll attach the receipt to your parent permission form (see below).
  3. Fill out these two forms:
  4. Turn the parent permission form, with both attachments, in to the library.
    • Attach your receipt for dues paid.
    • Attach your current transcript.
